It’s not that we are held responsible for his sin, or that we inherited his sin. It's more that we inherited the nature of sinning. We inherited the weakness that allows humans to sin. This then allowed sin to enter into our lives. This is why we humans are capable of committing all sorts of sins. Yes, we can be good. But at the same time, we can be very bad, just check the news and see what humanity is up to.

So we are not responsible for Adam's sin. But we have the same weakness that he had. Kinda like how Aragorn feared possession of the Ring, because he has the same blood of Isildur that flows through his veins. Hence, he thinks he will fall to the same temptation to keep the Ring, just like his Isildur did. We are in a similar boat, having the same weakness, the same taint of sin that Adam had.

Anyway, this taint of original sin, stops us from being able to reunite with God when we die. To put it simply, it blocks us from being able to go to Heaven. But God, not wanting to simply abandon us like that, makes a plan and sends his Son to save us. Jesus then, through his death, frees us from this taint of sin, allowing us the chance to reunite with God after our death in this world.

This is why the sacrament of Baptism involves the splashing of water on kids, or in other instances, fully submerging an individual in water. It is to wash away this taint of sin, so that we now have a path forward, a chance of gaining eternal life after death.
